Steinbeck Classic ‘Of Mice and Men’ comes to Christ College

The Arty-Facts Theatre group made a welcome return visit to Christ College to perform their version of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men for Year 11 students.

It is the story of two migrant field workers in California during the great depression; George, who looks forward to better life, and the childlike Lennie, who doesn’t know his own strength.

Adapted for the screen three times over the years, as well as the stage and even an opera, Steinbeck wrote his novella in 1937, drawing on much of his own experience when he himself worked in similar circumstances to his characters.

Drama Teacher Rosalia Robinson said: “It was a great help for our students to see Steinbeck’s characters brought to life. They were able to identify with the setting through the use of accent and costume, and understand how Lennie can’t help his behaviour.“

She added: “As it forms part of their English exam, seeing this live performance will give the students more scope when writing about the characters and the consequences of their actions.”
