Christ College leads Centenary Homage to Edwardian Boating Extravaganza

Pupils from Christ College took to the water at Pittville Park Boating Lake to Commemorate a fascinating event from Cheltenham’s history.

It was Mr. Dave Potts who noticed the happy coincidence of Christ College being present on the lake a hundred years to the day since the great Gloucestershire Historical Pageant was staged on and around the Boating Lake.

That event, which featured eight different historical events ranging from Roman times to George III‘s visits to Cheltenham, donated its profits to the veterans relief fund of the day.

The elaborate façade of a medieval castle was attached to Marle Hill House, which then stood near the lake, providing a splendid backdrop to the spectacle.

Choruses on board the larger boats took on the role of narrators as they floated by the attendant crowds, explaining the events they were witnessing in song.

And so it was that a hundred years later, another small flotilla took to the water in bright sunshine, enjoying the serenity of the water and the surroundings.

As well as Bell Boats from Christ College, vessels where also taken out by representatives of Cheltenham Borough Council, the Park Services and the Gloucestershire Constabulary.

Mr. Potts said: “It’s been a privilege to be involved in recreating this event, and an example of living history for the students and all others taking part.”
