Christ College gets into the Spoken Groove

Spoken Groove, the talented American duo of Peter Nevland and Paul Finley came to Christ College to spend a day with Year 9 students teaching different writing, composing and performing techniques.

The pair quickly engaged with their young audience with a dazzling display of their musical and lyrical virtuosity before splitting up to take separate workshops in their respective talents.

Paul Finley plays guitar, Mandolin and Native American flute, and compares his composing technique to that of a painter, capturing an image of a person or place.

Says Paul: “Music effects people profoundly, and our aim is to make people aware of their talents, which are often easier to access than they realise.”

Peter is the wordsmith, performing his poetry with great flare and charisma, and reflecting whatever subject matter is at hand on an emotional level.

“It’s been great,” said Peter. “The kids really paid attention from the start, and had some really creative contributions to make.”

Based in Austin, Texas, Spoken Groove have toured coast-to -coast in the United States, and have also performed in Canada, Germany and Australia. They are touring England this year, and are regulars at the Soul Survivor festivals held at the Bath & West showground in Somerset.

Christ College Anglican Chaplain Hannah Cooke said: “It’s been really exciting to have such internationally renowned Christian artists visiting our school. They are amazing performers, and it was a creative and fun-filled time for our students, with an important spiritual dimension.”
