Christ College students canoe adventure begins... in a swimming pool

Christ College pupils took their canoe to an unusual venue recently -  Kingsmead Swimming Pool—to practice safety drills.

The four students—Harry Coltraro, James Jeffries,  Martin Pates and Craig Parker—will be travelling along the Sharpness Canal to Gloucester Docks to fulfil the expedition element of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

Christ College Sports Centre manager Dave Potts said: “Prior to embarking on a river journey, it’s important for the students to gain confidence in a controlled environment. They need to know the techniques involved in getting out of the canoe, into the water and back again so they are prepared for any eventuality”.

The four adventurers will also be spending a night under canvas during their journey.

Harry said: “D of E really helps build up teamwork skills, and gives you the opportunity to try out new challenges.”

James added: “The expedition is the final element of our Bronze award. It will be good to have achieved something so worthwhile through a range of interesting activities.”

Dave Potts sums up: “The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme fosters independent thought amongst its candidates, and it’s the sort of achievement that can really make you stand out from the crowd in the employment market as well.”
