It
was a case of CSI: Cheltenham as two classes from Christ College in Arle road,
were invited to the University of Gloucestershire’s Francis Close Hall Campus to
learn about forensic science.
The two groups were given the chance to try a polygraph, or lie detector test, and then Pollen analysis, whereby different types of pollen are identified and compared microscopically, to identify the probable location of a fictitious crime scene.
Dr. Phil Tyson led the Lie Detection class, explaining how the equipment picks up anomalies in a subjects breathing, skin conductivity and pulse rate. Dr. Tyson said: “The students where enthusiastic about this session, particularly seeing their friends and teachers undergoing the test. There was some serious grilling going on!”
The university offers a wide range of courses involving the sciences of forensic psychology and criminology.
Dr. Tyson added: “We welcome the opportunity to share our expertise with local schools and colleges, and feel it is very important that young students are encouraged to think about higher education in all its aspects”.
The
visit was part of Aim Higher, a national programme of initiatives to develop and
encourage participation in higher education amongst young people who had not
previously considered it.
Christ College Science Teacher Karl Morris said: “The students behaved brilliantly and enjoyed themselves, having had their eyes opened to the possibilities of higher education.”
