Mass for Christ College held in School Chapel

29/01/09 - Mass was celebrated in the chapel at Christ College, attended by pupils and staff. Father Tom Smith, Assistant Parish Priest from St. Gregory’s and St. Thomas More’s Parishes, celebrated the Mass, and reminded students what a privilege the ceremony is. He also spoke about the importance of love, and how it is often the small everyday gestures that demonstrate our love for others. Students took part in the Mass with readings and musical contributions. Father Tom said: “It is always a great pleasure to celebrate Mass with the young people of Christ College.”....details here

India ‘Oar’ bust—Christ College Rows to Hyderabad

18/12/08 - It’s a long way to India—and Christ College students have been trying to get there by rowing machine! The eight Year 10 students have been sponsored to try and row the distance to Hyderabad as indicated on the virtual distance indicator on the machine to help raise funds for their visit to the country in January. Christ College SSCO Dan Derrick said: “As well as the rowing, the students have been raising funds by running Saturday morning football tournaments, bag packing at a local supermarket and a Christmas Disco.”...details here

Carols by Candle light – Christ College celebrates Christmas

16/12/08 - Christ College celebrated this special time of year with a candle-lit Carol Service. The theme of the service was Hope for Today, Hope for Tomorrow, and began with members of staff processing into the hall and performing Wait For The Lord by the prolific Taize composer Jacques Berthier. The Taize Community is an ecumenical Christian Monastic order in France, and their music is characterised by the chant-like repetition of lines of scripture as an aid to meditative prayer. Music for the service was provided by a group of students and staff, and included a selection of traditional and modern carols. In the Bleak Midwinter featured a solo by Amy Pierce, who demonstrated her vocal ability earlier this year by winning the School Talent Show.... details here

Christ College Students get Revision Tips from Expert Frank - and a Glimpse of Life on Campus.

11/12/08 - Year 11 students attended a fascinating lecture by Frank Harris, who shared his experience in the field of learning and skills development to help increase their revision skills. Held at the University of Gloucestershire’s Francis Close Hall Campus in Cheltenham, Frank quickly had the audience of students recognising their capacity to learn facts and figures  - almost without realising they were doing so! Christ College Creatives Show their Skills at Pittville Performing Arts Day

21/11/08 - Students from Christ College joined in at a Gifted and Talented Performing Arts Day held at Pittville School. Musicians, actors, dancers, artists and sculptors  also represented Pates, Dean Close, Pittville, Bournside, Winchcombe and Balcarras schools. Funded by the Independent State Schools Partnership, the aim of the day was to encourage students to develop their talents through further education. Sculptors set about creating animal figures, working from photographs and making wire armatures to build the shape around. Artists honed their skills....details here

Nomads are We! Youth For Christ Brings Panna Football to Christ College

21/11/08 - Christ College experienced RE lessons with a difference when the Youth For Christ Nomads team visited the school. The Nomads are passionate about football, and use the sport as a medium to spread the Christian message, in schools and community settings. Specialists in Panna football, a development of the Dutch Street Football scene, they brought with them an incredible mesh cage in which the game is played....details here

Christ College has got Talent—and Children In Need Benefit

14/11/08 - A host of talent came to the fore at Christ College as the school put on a show to raise money for charity. A rock band, singers, and a comedy drama group were among the acts competing, and the high standard made judging very difficult. Runner-up was Tom Carr with Jack, a ventriloquist act. Tom has owned Jack for three years, and his influences include Ken Dodd, Keith Harris and recent America’s Got Talent winner, Terry Fator. “One of the great things about ventriloquism, is that Jack can get away with saying things that I couldn’t!”, said Tom. But the overall winner was Amy Pierce from year 7, who sang the Rihanna song, Take a Bow. Amy has always enjoyed singing, and had previously part in a talent contest when she was at St. Gregory’s school....details here

With Proud Thanksgiving, Christ College Remembers the Fallen

11/11/08 - Christ College held it’s first Remembrance Day service, 90 years after the end of the First World War. Former RAF Chaplain Revd Steven Ware said that it was a sad fact that, although that conflict was said to be the war to end all wars, of all those 90 years, only one has not seen the loss of at least one service person. He also spoke of his experience as Joint Force Senior Chaplain during the Iraq War in 2003. Pupils who are members of local cadet units attended in uniform, and took part in poppy presentation and led the assembly in prayer. Mr. Mick Guilbert, who saw active service in the first Gulf War, read out his poem, a tribute to those who suffered in the trenches during the First World War....details here

A Fright at the Theatre - Christ College and The Woman in Black

05/11/08 - Christ College Drama students enjoyed a visit to Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre to see The Woman in Black. Enjoying a well-deserved reputation as a genuine spine-chiller, it is the story of a solicitor summoned to a remote house on the English East Coast to settle the affairs of a recently deceased woman, whose lonely task becomes ever more fraught as he experiences noises, inexplicable events and the apparition of the Woman in Black....details here

Steinbeck Classic ‘Of Mice and Men’ comes to Christ College

03/11/08 - The Arty-Facts Theatre group made a welcome return visit to Christ College to perform their version of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men for Year 11 students. It is the story of two migrant field workers in California during the great depression; George, who looks forward to better life, and the childlike Lennie, who doesn’t know his own strength. Adapted for the screen three times over the years, as well as the stage and even an opera, Steinbeck wrote his novella in 1937, drawing on much .... details here

‘Quo’ Drummer Jeff Demonstrates the Role of the Drums at Christ College

21/10/08 - Christ College rocked to the sound of Jeff Rich and his Drum Masterclass. Lincolnshire-based Jeff, former drummer with Status Quo, now specialises in demonstrating the art of the drummer in schools across the country, and has done so in over 5000 junior and senior schools. Jeff explained the history of the drum, from the earliest hollow logs through to the medieval Tabor and the modern drum kit that he has made his name with. A highlight was Jeff’s blistering barrage of a drum solo, after which the attending students had a chance to join in with percussion instruments. Like countless aspiring drummers, Jeff began as a youngster by playing a biscuit tin with a pair of knitting needles before getting a snare drum and building up his first kit....details here

Christ College Signs on for Visual Language Course

09/10/08 - Students and staff at Christ College have been enjoying a series of sign language lessons. Paula Jones, Gloucestershire Outreach Project Co-ordinator at Milestone School in Gloucester has been instructing people at schools and family centres around the county. Said Paula: “The idea of the course is to give people a better understanding of the importance of using sign language to help communicate with those who have difficulty with everyday speech.”....details here

08/10/08 - The main hall at Christ College was packed as six local primary schools joined in for their Harvest Festival celebration. Mrs Cecilia Spence, from Christ College’s Chaplaincy team, spoke of the history of the harvest festival, and how that in 1843, the Rev Robert Hawker held the first harvest thanksgiving service as we have come to know them today at his church in Morwenstow, Cornwall..... details here

Fair Game Theatre Group Ignites the Stage at Christ College

03/10/08 - Christ College was subjected to a shocking display of anti-social behaviour when the Stroud-based Fair Game Theatre Company performed at the school. Their production of Burnt Out told the story of Sean, a misguided 14 year old boy whose escalating series of pranks lead to him being seriously injured in a fire that leaves a man dead. The actor’s performance was enhanced by the powerful use of urban music, striking lighting effects and a simple but ingenious modular set design, that took the audience from the graffiti-tagged inner city streets to the hospital room were Sean must confront the grim consequences of his actions....details here

They’re Such Good Sports at Gloucester Road School—Thanks to Christ College!

02/10/08 - There was excitement amongst year 3 pupils at Gloucester Road School when Christ College paid a visit to present them with some sports equipment. The Sports Council is made up of six year-10 pupils who help shape the direction of sports at the College, and they decided it would a be a good idea to use Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers their school had collected to enhance the facilities that the Gloucester Road PE store has to offer....details here

The Landfill that Time Forgot: Christ College Hunts for Fossils and Sees the Future for Recycling

26/09/08 - Suitably attired in hard hats and high visibility vests, Year 8’s from Christ College enjoyed a trip to the Grundon Landfill site at Bishop’s Cleeve. The 140 acre site is part of Wingmoor Farm, the largest area of landfill in the county. The students were able to look for fossils in a freshly dug landfill ‘cell’, where the layers of clay had not seen the light of day for some 180 million years. A variety of fossils, glittering in the sunshine thanks to a patina of iron pyrite, were harvested and identified by the enthusiastic budding palaeontologists. They where then taken on a guided tour of the recycling facilities, where everything from bulbs to bicycles and sofas to stereos are sorted to optimise the recyclable content.....details here

Gideons visit Christ College

19/09/08 - Christ College welcomed Mr. Tony Swinson and Mr. Derek Coldrick from the Gideons to their Year 7 assembly. Mr. Swinson told the students something of their work before presenting a copy of the New Testament and Psalms to all who wanted one. The Gideons are dedicated to distributing copies of the Bible throughout the world, and are well known for doing so to hotel rooms, but also to many other institutions, including schools. Mr. Swinson pointed out the New Testament is the foundation document of the Christian faith, and their edition features a helpful index  with which readers can locate particularly apt and supportive passages in times of need....details here

Christ College Girls Enjoy a Fruitful Start to the School Year

19/09/08 - Three year 7 girls at Christ College enjoyed the fruits of their labours when their designs for a new healthy smoothie came out on top. Tyrana Patterson, Maddie Chambers and Beth Ganthwaite all won juicing machines of their own when they invented recipes and created the marketing for their new smoothie ideas as part of a healthy Living Day at the school....details here

Christ College Year 7’s Kick Off New Term with Healthy Living Day

11/09/08 - Year 7’s at Christ College had a great start to the term when they took part in a Healthy Living day. Things started off with a bounce when they tried out trampolining, a sport which benefits the cardiovascular system, develops motor skills, and of course, is great fun! Then they tried their hands (and feet!) at Kickboxercise, and enjoyed a taster session at the activity, known to benefit balance, flexibility and co-ordination. 10/09/08 - Pupils from Kingsmead School and Star College joined Christ College Students in taking part in a revolutionary new IT Specialist Diploma. The value of the Diploma is that it teaches IT skills in genuinely work-related contexts, and has an equivalency of 7 GCSE’s. Christ College Girls Rewarded for Historic Article

20/07/08 - When Christ College got involved with the centennial recreation of the Gloucestershire Historical Pageant, three of their students jumped at the chance to write about the experience. The Pageant took place on and around Pittville Boating Lake in 1908, and Christ College Bell Boats took to the water to mark the event. Cheltenham Local History Society offered prizes for the best article, and twins Evie & Melanie Townsend and Jade Stockwell were presented with a gift voucher and  a certificate by Cheltenham Spa Town Crier, Ken Brightwell....details here

Sporting Fun Day Draws the Crowds at Christ College

12/07/08 -  ‘Don’t Spectate - Participate’ was the order of the day as Christ College held a Sports Fun Day. The event focussed on the schools Sport Centre facility, and families attending had the chance to try their hands at a number of different sporting activities. There was plenty of variety for the young and young at heart: A veritable inflatable village of bouncy castles, face painting, “sumo” wrestling  and street dance, as well as a presence by regular users of the Sports Centre facilities such as the Cotswold Fencing Club, the CST New Image Majorettes and the Cheltenham Harriers.....details here

Civil War History Brought to Life at Christ College

11/07/08 - Christ College pupils where treated to a real hands-on history lesson when they got a taste of what life during the 17th Century was like when Discover History paid a visit. Historical recreation specialists Paul Harding and Helen Lee brought the English Civil War vividly to life with their accounts of the brutal and divisive combat, and the shocking medical procedures of the time. Paul, dressed as a soldier of the period, showed the students authentic pike drills, and let them try on the type of armour that would have been common on both sides of the conflict.... details here

Christ College leads Centenary Homage to Edwardian Boating Extravaganza

10/7/08 - Pupils from Christ College took to the water at Pittville Park Boating Lake to Commemorate a fascinating event from Cheltenham’s history. It was Mr. Dave Potts who noticed the happy coincidence of Christ College being present on the lake a hundred years to the day since the great Gloucestershire Historical Pageant was staged on and around the Boating Lake. That event, which featured eight different historical events ranging from Roman times to George III‘s visits to Cheltenham, donated its profits to the veterans relief fund of the day.... details here

26/06/08 - Year Nines from Christ College had a taste of the world of haute couture when they attended the Fashionista Enterprise Design Event at Hartpury College. The event was part of an Aim Higher Business & Enterprise Interschool Challenge developed by Brockworth Enterprise School, and took the students through the creative side of the business, with the teams coming up with a company name, a range of clothing and an advertising scheme to help promote their look.... details here

25/06/08 - The talented students of Christ College took centre stage as the school celebrated its first year. Hosting the evening were the school’s own version of Ant and Dec, Tom Savory and Sam Morgan. A slide show illustrated the range of exciting events that had defined the year, including the schools many sporting activities, their performances of Bugsy Malone at the Playhouse Theatre, and the spiritual dimension that makes Christ College what it is. School Rock band Quadranomix performed one of their punchy, tightly rehearsed numbers, and then the drama group performed a Big Brother – inspired sketch that illustrated the fickle and fleeting nature of modern celebrity.... details here

Unlikely “Haka” launches Tag Rugby Tournament at Christ College

18/6/08 - Teams from eight local primary schools converged on Christ College to take part in a Tag Rugby Tournament. After a warm-up session, the youngsters were given some last minute pointers in the game by coach Ken Cuthbert. Just as the fearsome New Zealand All-Blacks get fired up before a match by performing the Haka, these youngsters were also put into the spirit of the game—by singing the SpongeBob Squarepants theme! “The kids all know the words, and it’s a great ice breaker at an occasion like this,” says coach Ken. 21/05/08 - Future carers enjoyed an informative day at Stroud College, where representatives of different aspects of caring professions spoke about their work and demonstrated some of the skills involved. Stroud area midwife Janet Hellewell gave a fascinating insight into her vocation as she gave a talk on what to do if you should encounter an emergency childbirth, and what a lifeline a passer-by is to a distressed mother- to-be giving birth unexpectedly. She spoke movingly of her chosen profession, saying what a privilege it is to bring new life into the world.... details here

Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme gets Kick Start at Christ College

16/05/08 - Christ College held a Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme week to set 30 of its students on their way to receiving the Bronze D of E award. The week’s events included first aid, with resuscitation techniques practised on “Resusci Ann” dummies, an outdoor classroom that included putting up tents and improvising camp equipment such as utensil and boot racks, as well as cooking, map & compass skills and other aspects of camp craft. There are 275,000 people involved in the prestigious scheme at any one time in the UK alone.... details here

02/05/08 - Christ College were delighted to welcome Mrs. Sudhamani Dhulpudi, Mr. Niranjan Singh, Mr. Rama Rao, Mr. Bobbili Muthaiah and Mr. Vijaya Bhasker, visitors from two schools in Hyderabad, India. Christ College Participates in Centenary Rugby League Contest

02/05/08 - 1908: Edward Vll was on the throne, Henry Campbell-Bannerman was Prime Minister, and in Cheltenham, the first ever series-deciding international game of Rugby League took place between the New Zealand All Golds and the Northern Union (England) on February 15th. In commemoration of this event, eight Gloucestershire schools competed for the 1908 Cup at the Prince of Wales Stadium.... details here

01/05/08 - Christ College has taken delivery of two Bell Boats - and they were brought to the school by the designer of the revolutionary craft himself, David Train. David is an internationally recognised Olympic Canoe coach, who devised the 10-seater, twin hulled craft to open up the sport of canoeing to a wider group of people than is possible with one-person canoes. .... 30/4/08 - Spoken Groove, the talented American duo of Peter Nevland and Paul Finley came to Christ College to spend a day with Year 9 students teaching different writing, composing and performing techniques. Mother of Peace Orphanage says siyabonga to Christ College

23/04/08 - Christ College was delighted to welcome Hugh and Irene Holland from the Mother of Peace Orphanage in KwaZulu Natal. In an informative and sometimes moving address, Mr. Holland spoke of how the orphanage came about, as the result of a prayer group that wanted to do something practical to look after children whose parents had been lost to AIDS. The Orphanage is located at a former sugar cane plantation, and the children are clothed, fed and well looked after. They go to school, and there is a strong spiritual component in their lives.... details here

21/04/08 - It’s not every day you get to hold a professional sports trophy - but that’s what happened when the Rugby League Engage Superleague Trophy came to Christ College. League Representatives Lionel Hurst and John Huxley displayed the trophy to awe struck pupils in advance of the Cheltenham Rugby Festival on May 2nd and the Millennium Magic Superleague weekend in Cardiff on the 3rd and 4th of May..... details here

Christ College Supports Sport Relief with Wake ‘n’ Shake

14/03/08 - Christ College got into the spirit of Sports Relief by staging a Wake ‘n’ Shake session to start the day. Pupils donated £1 to the charity for the privilege of wearing sports clothing to school, and were led in a vigorous aerobic dance workout session by girls from year 11. Established in 2002, Sports Relief is a fundraising event which is held every two years. Its proceeds go to Comic Relief, who use them to help people living challenging lives in the UK and around the world.... details here

14/03/08 - Christ College pupils took their canoe to an unusual venue recently -  Kingsmead Swimming Pool—to practice safety drills. The four students—Harry Coltraro, James Jeffries,  Martin Pates and Craig Parker—will be travelling along the Sharpness Canal to Gloucester Docks to fulfil the expedition element of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award... Balloons go up at Christ College for aerial charity

7/3/08 - Christ College pupils raised money for the County Air Ambulance Trust by staging a balloon race. It was a spectacular event as the balloons were released, and promptly soared over the school and out of sight. Teacher Karl Morris said: “This was a year 9 charity fundraising event, and so far, we know of balloons that have travelled as far as Buckingham, Essex and even Hearne Bay in Kent.”... Details here

13/2/08 - Pupils at Christ College enjoyed a performance of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, as the Arty-Facts Theatre group visited the school. The four actors performed with great enthusiasm and panache, as they realised scenes from the Shakespearean classic, and explained key dramatic points and staging techniques to students studying the play as part of their Key Stage 3 SATs... Defining Moment’ as Christ College celebrates first Anglican Eucharist

20/1/08 - Pupils at Christ College took part as the school celebrated its first Anglican Eucharist since the school became a joint Anglican / Catholic faith school.

24/1/08 - Young scientists from seven local schools gathered at Christ College to conduct experiments with a sporting theme as part of the Gifted and Talented scheme. Sessions included the study of the effects of exercise on the body (in which students heart rates where monitored while they used rowing machines), the biomechanics of the high jump, and nutrition in sport...
